Bee Ready for Winter: Insights from the Temple Area Beekeeper’s October Meeting

By Gaby Warlick

The Temple Area Beekeeper’s Association held its monthly meeting on Thursday, October 10th, at the Troy Community Center. The featured speaker was Advanced Beekeeper, Danielle Fleming, who shared her expertise on how to winterize bees. Her presentation offered invaluable tips for ensuring hives remain healthy and productive throughout the colder months.

Winterizing bees is a crucial aspect of beekeeping, and Danielle’s informative talk guided members through best practices such as insulating hives, ensuring proper ventilation, and maintaining sufficient honey stores to prevent colony starvation. She also addressed the importance of monitoring for pests like mites, which can wreak havoc on a weakened hive during winter.

Danielle’s practical advice resonated with the audience, and she stayed afterward to answer a variety of questions from new and experienced beekeepers alike. Topics ranged from how to handle sudden temperature drops to managing small hives that might need extra support to survive the season. The Temple Area Beekeeper’s Association meets regularly on the second Thursday of each month at the Troy Community Center, providing a platform for beekeepers of all levels to learn, share experiences, and support one another in their efforts to maintain healthy bee populations. With winter approaching, attendees left the meeting feeling well-prepared to give their hives the best chance for survival.
